2003 Ride Reports
    December 28 - CCCC
Started out at 10:15 after waiting for late arrivals.  Bank temp showed 39 degrees, but it was rising fast.
Snow and ice on the bike trail led to a diversion  north on Goodrich. Traffic was almost nonexistent,

sun was bright, and winds not a factor. The first layer of jackets came off about 6 miles out as the
route entered the horse farms and dairy farm territory of NE Erie county (Martin, Miland, Sandhill,
Strickler). Traffic still not existent. One short snow traverse where road was closed to cars for bridge
repair on Lapp Rd., good place for banana break and to remove more clothes. Otherwise roads clear,
pace was steady but slow to enjoy the scenery and utter silence. Turned around about 15 miles out and
retraced route, since it had been so nice. Traffic incredibly light. Lots of dogs out enjoying the sun. An
overweight Golden  Retriever can hold 16-17 mph for about 2/10 mile, then fades fast. Temp had reached
54 degrees by the finish, but with the bright sun it seemed like a summer day. A very enjoyable ride!

    November 23 - CCCC

Mostly sunny, 58º and breezy as we headed out this morning. There were quite a few people out on this
beautiful November morning. A lot of dog walkers especially. Decided to take the old route to the park
today, down Keller to Utley. This adds a few miles to the ride. Akron Falls was roaring and the creek
was as high as we've seen it all year. Bill had the best time down "the big hill" topping out at 48.2 mph.
It was absolutely wonderful, being able to ride in shorts a a tee shirt this late in the season. The bank
thermometer was showing 72º as we had a nice lunch out on the patio after the ride. Sara stopped by
to say hi to the group.

    November 9 - CCCC
We left the bank parking lot promptly at 10:00.  There was no wind and not a cloud in the sky,
but the temperature was 32 degrees.  The weather was brisk , but the morning was perfect for

riding.  We noticed that the water in the ditches by the side of the trail was frozen. We had the
trail to ourselves except for a couple of people walking dogs.  On the return trip we rode the new
paved strip from Strickler Rd. to Kraus Rd.  It wasn't quite finished, but it was ride able, and it
was wide like a road...it must be an access road for future parking lots. We got back to the
    parking lot at 12:00 noon.

October 12 - Chestnut Ridge Ride
Overcast, breezy and 55º when we headed out on our second annual fall foliage ride. The
leaves were very close to being in peak color and, in some areas, were quite brilliant. Traffic
was very light until we got to Herman Hill Rd. Once we turned down Back Creek Rd. we left
the cars behind. Took a short break on the Mill St. bridge and then headed back. As we left
Boston it was getting darker to the west and it looked like we might get rained on. Took a
detour at Newton Rd. and rode straight back to the lodge. Got packed up well before we
saw any rain. Everyone was invited out to "Camp Edward" for an open house. Those who took
up Ed and Pat's invitation were treated to a wonderful chili dinner with apple pie and cider
for desert. While we were eating the sky cleared and the sun came out to really light up
    the autumn colors.

September 28 - First Annual Lewiston to Youngstown Ride
Sunny, 55º and a slight wind out of the southwest as we left Academy Park and headed
past all of the venders that were set up for the Harvest festival. Dave had the turns
painted on the route in addition to the map and cue sheets. No way was anyone going
to get lost today. Very little traffic as we rode out of town and up along the river.
Took a break at Fort Niagara State Park. We stopped right at Lake Ontario where
there were 25 sailboats racing today. The air was clear enough to easily see the
Toronto skyline. A fife and drum group was playing at the fort. We headed west along
the lake for awhile before turning south. The headwind was apparent as our speed
slightly decreased. After regrouping in Youngstown, we started to get spread out
a bit. The faster riders made a beeline back to the vehicles bypassing Joseph Davis
State Park. Those of us who followed the route found the park completely empty. We
had the whole road to ourselves. For some reason I got the urge to take my hands off
the bars. To my amazement, I was able to easily ride the Lynx no handed for about
a third of a mile. Prior to today, I could only keep the bike steady for a few seconds
before veering off to the side. Leaving the park we picked up the bike trail that took
us back to the river. The Harvest Festival was in full swing when we got back to
Lewiston. Some riders headed for home while others enjoyed the food and festivities.
Many thanks to Dave Fleck for putting together this very enjoyable ride.

Cloudy and 51º as we headed out this morning. Like the past two Sunday's, we started riding without
a definite route in mind. We rode through Clarence, Pendleton, Wendeville and into Amherst. Riding
the Canalway Trail we chose Veterans Canal Park as our rest stop and turn around point. We had
ridden a little more than 18 miles at this point. Sara requested 15 mile return route. We ended up
finding a 12 mile way back to the coffee shop. There was live entertainment today and the patio
was full of people enjoying the music, food and the sunshine.

Hazy sun, humid, breezy and 75º when we headed out at 9:01. Hooked up with Denny and Dennis 6 miles
down the road. They camped out overnight so as not to miss the ride. You never know when you won't be
able to get across the bridge. Fred had a flat on his rear tire just outside of the falls. Stopped at
Table House Rock for a rest stop. Met up with Dave and Melissa near Queenston. Rained very lightly for
5 or 6 minutes. Lunch at the Epicurean was just as good as ever. We were faced with a pretty stiff head
wind most of the way back. Stopped at The Lighthouse for our afternoon break.

Today was just about as good as it gets when it comes to riding conditions. Totally blue sky, not a cloud to
be seen. Dead calm air, very low humidity and temperatures in the mid 60's to mid 70's. We headed north
this morning with the intent to ride some new roads. After working our way up to Niagara County, we found
ourselves looking for a rest spot. Bruce suggested the deli in Wolcottsville. This turned out to be a fine
choice. Leaving there, we headed east past the Tonawanda State Wildlife Management Area. Soon we were
in Genesee County riding by the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. These areas are part of 19,000 acres
set aside for waterfowl habitat. Stopping to regroup just outside of Alabama, we noticed about a dozen
turkey vultures circling overhead. they seemed to be watching Sara. Sara mentioned that she was starting
to tire and was feeling a little weak. The guys all agreed to keep the buzzards from carrying Sara off.
Heading south we rode through the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. All the  gas stations had lines of vehicles
waiting to take  advantage of the untaxed fuel. Leaving the Seneca Nation, we rode through Pembroke and
into the Village  of Akron. We picked up the bike path and took that most of the way back to the coffee shop.
Today's ride  ended up being 41 miles long. This was ,without a doubt, the very nicest Sunday ride we've had in years.

Cloudy and a little breezy, the group left the coffeehouse heading north up Goodrich road.  A little over
4 miles out, Paul realized that he had several broken spokes, and he had to head home for repairs.  The
rest of the group meandered at a leisurely pace (even for us!!) through country roads around Tonawanda
Creek, then turned back toward Akron. We hit the bike trail at Hake Road and headed back to the
coffeehouse for an early lunch. Another ride in "iffy" weather, and we didn't get wet!

Overcast, warm and humid as we headed out at 9:59. At 10:00 it started to rain very lightly. At
10:06 the rain stopped. Not many people out on the towpath today. Some boats were cruising by
and we had lots of waves from the curious boaters. We got to Medina around 11:30 and rode
around the town awhile before finding a place for lunch. We asked a local about restaurants
and were told that the one we were right in front of was very good. We parked the bikes and
went into "The Country Club restaurant". They had a huge menu and everyone was very happy with
their meals. The clouds broke somewhat on the ride back and we enjoyed the sunshine. We passed

Overcast with an occasional raindrop hitting our foreheads, but no breeze, four brave souls left
for the Sunday morning ride at a leisurely pace.  Jerry Hanley and Ripley waved from the parking
lot as Jerry didn't think we would ride and left his bike home.  Sara and Don led the way as we
headed out.  There was a slight variation in our route as we continued straight on Keller Road
to Utley Road, the back to the bike path.  We only stopped for a couple of minutes at the park
because we wanted to get back before the rain, but there was actually a couple of weak rays of
sunshine poking through the clouds as we headed back to the coffee house.  Back at the coffee
house, we met Minette Raines.  She told us Bruce wimped out because of the threatening weather
    and went to play tennis.

August 9,10 - Pine Creek Trail Ride
It was rainy on Friday afternoon, by 6:30 all the riders staying at the Penn Wells hotel in
Wellsboro had arrived. We had a nice relaxing dinner and caught up with each other, in the
hotel dining room.  Ed and Pat Weiss, Paul Bigelow, Milan Demko, my wife Sharon, and Myself
    (Denny Voorhees), were in attendance.

The sky was threatening on Saturday morning. The weather channel showed a large storm
area south and west of Wellsboro. It was however, warm and humid in town and largely dry.
We had breakfast at the “Famous Wellsboro Diner” ( famous by their own estimation I reckon).
There were 6 of us jammed into the last booth in the back, when I spotted a SUV with a
recumbent on top stopped at the red light next to the diner.
“It looks like someone with a Burley headed into town, It's got Pennsylvania plates on the
vehicle is it anyone anybody knows”. I asked
    “Nope” was the general reply.
“Hey Ed, didn't that guy from Erie, who called you have a Burley”? Asked Paul.
With that Ed practically leaped over the booth and sprinted up the isle of the diner, heading
for the door. I’d heard Ed was fast, but wow he can hurdle too.
A couple minutes later Ed came back and introduced us to Dennis Miodis, from just west of Erie.
Dennis had come over for the day to ride the trail with us, and he turned out to be a good bit of
    the days entertainment.

After breakfast we picked up one other rider, Phil Snyder from nearby Tioga, Pa. Phil is a good
friend of mine, who still rides upright. Our convoy reached the parking area at Blackwell about
9:30 am and there were a few cars in the lot already. We unloaded and assembled our bikes and
were on the trail about a quarter to ten.

One of my big concerns was the trail would be slimy and gritty due to the excessive rain in the
area during the summer. This turned out to be exactly opposite of the trail condition. Indeed
the rain had packed the surface down hard. The normal ½ inch of loose material was down to
about an eight of and inch and even narrow road tires handled very well.

With trail in nice shape we made good  time on the trail. The lower section of the Pine Creek trail
has only been open for 2 years. It is my personal favorite section stretching 25 miles from
Blackwell south to Waterville winding along the Creek and going right through several small
villages. There are however, a number of crossings that incorporate an offset gate barrier. It
can be a close shave maneuvering around the gates. I'm not how a real LWB would handle it.  If
you get tired of riding the trail there are many opportunities to ride on route 414, a typical hard
scrabble state road here in Pennsylvania. There are bathrooms approximately every 6 miles or so
along the trail. In many places you are way below some of the mountain peaks of the endless
    mountains of Pennsylvania.

Ed and Pat decided to turn back at the 15 mile point. The weather was getting threatening and
it looked like it might start to rain. The rest of us continued on for a couple more miles until it
did actually start to rain. It looked like a pretty downpour so reluctantly we headed back up the
trail. Dennis, Phil, Ed, Pat and I met at the general store in Cedar Run, a quaint little place, with
great ice cream. Paul and Milan were in the zone and had skipped the stop and were doing a fast
    ride back to the cars.

After an ice cream break we headed back up the trial. Ed and Pat had left earlier, so Dennis Phil
and I were taking our time riding and chatting the whole way. A couple miles up the trail Paul and
Milan found us. They had gone back to the parking lot, decided it was too nice right then to put
the bikes away and came back to ride with us. We all continued back to the parking lot. Along the
way Dennis and Phil swapped bikes. Dennis had a Burley Canto, and Phil a vintage Lotus road bike.
They got back to the parking lot a bit behind us. Phil had a big smile riding in on that bent. Dennis
commented that the Lotus, while a real nice bike belonged in the Smithsonian Museum “Right  next
to Lance Armstrong's’ testicle.” Dennis does have a way with words.

The rain started in earnest, and we spent the rest of the afternoon huddled under the lift gates of
2 vans, drinking beer and solving world problems. Then it was back to the hotel for a quick shower
    and dinner.

Day 2  - Snake, Rattler and Rollin'

Sunday was a much better day weather wise. It started out warm and humid and then became hot
and humid. We got to the trail parking lot at Darling Run around 8:45 unloaded the bikes and waited
until a little after 9 to start the days ride. A couple local riders were supposed to show, but I think
the weather kept them away, it did look like it may rain around the starting time. We did talk to a
couple on bents that were there from the Philadelphia area, up for a weekend visit to the area.

Down the trail a mile or so we saw a couple nice Whitetail bucks on the bank across the creek. Without
field glasses the antlers were very visible, even though they were about a  hundred yards away.
Four miles down the trail we stopped for a photo op at the falls at the Turkey Trail, a hiking
path that comes down from the canyon overlook. The falls were really rolling due to the heavy
rain in the last 24 hours. At the 8 mile point is the rest and camping area at Tiadaghton (Tie a dot in).
There the only access to the trail and campground is a primitive road from Stony Fork.  The
campground has a restroom a pitcher pump, some picnic tables a few fire rings. Camping is by
permit only and must be obtained at the district DCNR office in Wellsboro.

We stopped for a washroom break, and Ed and Pat bid us goodbye. They wanted to get back
home in time to catch up on some work on their new place before Monday. Paul, Milan and I
continued south along the trail. While the trail wasn't all that busy we did see other riders
    and walkers throughout the ride.

About 2 miles down from Tiadaghton, we encountered some more wildlife of the cold blooded
variety. We were coming up on a couple MTB riders about a hundred yards ahead when they
put on the brakes hard and one of the Riders did a foot down spin around on his MTB. Well
at least that was his plan, he promptly lost balance and landed on the cinders. He got up very
quickly though, never taking his eyes off the side of the trail closest to the creek.
“I’ll bet they see a snake”. I said to Paul.
Sure enough as we got up to them they pointed to our right and there were two good sized
Timber Rattlers coiled up on the uncrushed rail ballast at the edge of the trail. We quietly
got off the bikes and soon discovered a third one a few feet away from the first two. Paul
took out his camera and took quite a few pictures, using the telephoto lens but not the macro.
The snakes entertained us for a few minutes with rattle tunes and we decided we would leave
them for others to discover. Lest you think the area is crawling with snakes, in all the years
I've lived and traveled in the area (more than 50) I've never seen a rattler in the wild, today
I would see 5 of them. We would see 2 more along the trail in much the same manner. The
canyon does have a reputation, but seriously it is has been a rare occurrence in the last 15
years or so. The Rattlesnake is on the “protected status” list here in Pennsylvania.

We arrived at the parking lot in Blackwell where we had parked the day before. It was around
11:00 a.m. and the lot was full. A large group of scouts were heading south on the trail for a bike
ride, to fulfill one of the requirements of the Cycling merit badge, and rafters and canoes were
putting in or taking out of the creek. Paul gave a little girl with MS her first opportunity to sit
on a recumbent. We talked to her father who was interested in getting her a recumbent style
trike and pointed him toward a couple recumbent shops in his area.

The trip back was uneventful, the day was heating up and the humidity was climbing. The trail
was drying out a bit and the top layer was getting a little looser than it had been previous. We
stopped briefly at Darling Run for the bathroom and then rode the last mile of the trail beyond
the parking lot. There is a small overflow parking area north of route 6 and an unmarked
entrance to the trail. Currently the trail ends here, plans are for a 6 mile continuation to the
junction of route 6 and 287, about 3 miles west of Wellsboro. It was scheduled to be completed
this year, but budgets what they are, it will probably be a ways out in the future.

Sundays ride was 35 miles in total and we completed it around 1:30 in the afternoon. The bikes
generated a bit of interest and we spent an hour or more talking to people and giving several
their first roll out on a recumbent.

We all headed back to our respective hometowns around 3 in the afternoon. As always it was
great fun to get together and ride bikes. In spite of the less than ideal weather, nobody
complained, but thank god for beer. It was my wife Sharon and my pleasure to host the
gathering. Almost everybody was well behaved.

If the group wants to add the ride to their schedule next year, I will be more than happy to
arrange for it. I have discovered a possible camping option and several other hotel/motel
arrangements. Wellsboro is becoming a very busy summer tourist destination, so planning
should start early.                   (Denny in Sayre, Pa   “Bent but not broken”)

July 12 - Ellicott Creek Trailway (AKA Bill & Paul's Big Adventure Ride)

The weather wasn't as nice as we had hoped for. It was 65º, mostly cloudy and very
windy as we headed out. Very light traffic on the bike paths this morning. The City
of Tonawanda's downtown section was closed to traffic as the vendors began setting
up for the annual Canal Fest. We were able to ride through with no problem at all.
Reaching the river we found ourselves buffeted by the strong wind. We had to lean
into the wind to be able to ride a straight line. Isle View and Niawanda Parks were
both nearly deserted. We had the whole path to ourselves. Tom and Richard broke
off and headed back. Bill and I pressed on. We arrived at The Hatch at 11:40. The
wind here was so strong we had to lean our bikes against some trees to keep them from
being blown over. After eating we looked across the Buffalo River at the lighthouse.
It appeared to be windier over there. I suggested we ride over and check it out. Bill
said ok with no hesitation. We followed the bike lane through the Cobblestone District
and past the General Mills plant. You could smell the Cherrios© baking. Bill wasn't aware
of the fact that this was the only place in the world where Cherrios© are made . We got up to
the gate at the Coast Guard Station and made our request to ride up to the lighthouse.
We were asked to wait while someone was found to give us the tour. After a six or seven
minute wait, we were told no one was available and we could only enter if we had a military
ID card. Before leaving I asked what the peak wind gust was in the past hour. We were
told it was 32 knots (36.8 mph). We were bound and determined to find the windiest spot
we could. Heading south we stopped at the Small Boat Harbor for a break. Riding past
Gallagher Beach we watched a half dozen wind surfers racing back and forth. They looked
like they were having the time of their lives. Continuing south we reached Tifft St. and
decided to check out the nature preserve. It's hard to imagine this beautiful, tranquil
wooded park was once the site of a huge steel manufacturing facility. We made our way
back to the Riverwalk and began the ride home. Two F-14 Phantom's made a low level
fly over downtown as we got to Niagara St. One of them was flying "clean side down."
With the wind at our backs we were able to cruise along at 24-25 mph. It didn't take
long to get back to the trailhead. As we loaded up the 'bents, it began to rain lightly.
Turned out to be a very unique ride today.

    July 6 - CCCC

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning. Bright blue sky, 70º and a gentle breeze. Don
finally brought his new white titanium M5 Shock Proof to show off. It's a very, very
impressive bike. We were pleased to have Bill & Theresa along with us today. Theresa
is still waiting for her new Volae to arrive. Meanwhile she did a fine job riding Jerry's
trike. Quite a few people out on the trail enjoying the sunshine. Numerous chipmunks
and a bluebird were spotted along the way. The Lynx had the best run down "the big
hill" reaching 43.2 MPH. The coffee shop was busy today but we were able to the
group seated together on the patio to enjoy a most excellent lunch.

Partly sunny and 65º as we gathered for our ride this morning. Bruce arrived with a shiny
new triathlon racer to try out today. A strong wind out of the south west made for a quick
ride to the park. Murder Creek is quite low so the falls weren't much to look at. The Lynx
had the best run down "the big hill" topping out at 47.8 MPH. Had a nice lunch at the coffee
    shop.

Sunny, warm and breezy today. Tom B. suggested that we ride a different route for a
change. Started to ride the usual "alternate route" out to the prison, but ended up on some
roads and trails we had never taken before. Stopped at Westwood Park for our break.
Ended up with close to 30 miles when we got back.

Mostly cloudy, breezy and 45º as we rode out this morning. Bill had the fastest run down "the
big hill" hitting only 40.2 mph. There was a stiff wind blowing up the escarpment today. The sky
cleared as we headed back and the sun came out. The coffee shop was very crowded this afternoon

It was mostly cloudy and 53º as we rode out this morning. Very little activity on the bike path
and very light traffic on the roads. The park was all but deserted on this holiday weekend. The
creek was running good after all the rain last week so the falls looked nice today. Ed had the best
time down "the big hill" reaching 45.5 mph. Had to ride into a headwind going back. On the plus
side the sky cleared and by the time we arrived back at the coffee shop there wasn't a cloud
    to be seen.

May 18 - Port Dalhousie Ride

It turned out to be a really fine day for a ride. Mostly sunny and temps in the high sixties
inland. It was cooler right next to Lake Ontario. There was a bit of a wind coming off the
lake. Geoff rode up all the way from Fort Erie. We got off at about 10:20 and rode though
the northern section of Port Dalhousie before heading south into the country. Milan led us
past miles of orchards with thousands of fruit trees in blossom. The vineyards were mostly
bare with only the tinniest of leaves on some of the vines. Our route took us right into a time
trial race. We were stopped by the police at one intersection to let a rider go through. There
must have been 20 riders race past us. Not one of them was smiling. Most had a pained look
on their face or the look of intense concentration. Our first stop was at the top of the
escarpment, just above Rockway Falls. We rode into Jordon at about 11:45, just in time for
lunch at the ZOOMA ZOOMA COFFEE LOUNGE AND GOURMET EMPORIUM. There were
four people on staff today so we didn't have to wait long for our food. There were quite a
few tourists wandering around Jordon and a couple snapped our pictures as we rode out of town.
Pat lost a crank arm on the way back, but was able to get it back on and make it in. We arrived
back at the park about 1:30. Milan invited everyone over to his house for the rest of the afternoon.
Those of us who had the time to spend were treated to an excellent show of hospitality by Milan
and Mary. Wonderful food, drink and conversation. We were treated to the finest Baba Ghanoush
I've ever tasted. Unfortunately the day grew long and some of us had a long drive home. Many thanks
to Milan for the great time we had today.

We had two new riders join the group today. Joe on his new Streetmachine, and Don on
his new EZSport Limited. 48º and bright sun as we headed out. Lots of people out on the
path today. The trees and bushes are starting to bud out and turn green. Riding past the
big cattle farm on Utley Rd., it was evident the bulls had a good winter. Couldn't count
how many young calves were out in the pasture. Tom had the best time down "the big hill"
today, hitting 44.2 mph. Back at the coffee shop we found a line almost out the door. There
was a new employee behind the counter - Vanessa. She looked like she was handling the
pressure with no problem. We pulled a few tables together out on the patio and enjoyed
the food and the sun. Dave Levine took some pictures.

April 26 - Ellicott Creek Trailway

It was about 43º and overcast as we headed out down the bike path this morning. Not much
traffic until we got up to U.B. today was their annual "Oozfest" the largest mud volleyball
tournament in the country. According to the radio, there were 128 teams and over 1000
participants. A few dozen or so figured the bike path was a great spot to sit and watch the
action. Bill's air horn got their attention as we slowly made our way through. Some of the
players were so completely covered in mud all you could see were their eyes. Riding into
Ellicott Creek Park, we found a section of the road that was all roughed up and full of
rocks and stones. Three quarters of the way through the park Tom's rear tire started
to go flat. It took about 20 minutes to get a new tube in and the wheel back on. While
we were working on the repair, a crowd gathered nearby to witness a couple exchange
marriage vows. By this time the sky had completely cleared and we were now enjoying the
bright sun. Tom informed us that The Hatch wasn't open yet and recommended another
place to stop for lunch. It's on Niagara St. near Bird Ave. and is called Rascals. The
food was very good, the people very friendly and the prices very fair. what more could
you ask for. I was feeling adventurous and in the mood for something different. I ordered
up a bowl of Dandelion and bean soup. Instead of having a pot ready to go they made it up
as it was called for. The wait was worth it. The soup was outstanding. The ride back was
a little slower as we were faced with a head wind. As we got closer to the "Oozfest" site,
we found the path and street littered with discarded clothing and footwear. All the same
color - brown. The ride ended up being about 36 miles.

It was sunny and in the 60s as we got ready to ride. Kathy showed off her new jacket, shoes
and SPDs. Not many people on the bike path but there was just enough traffic to slow us
down at most of the road crossings. Murder Creek was flowing about half the volume as last
week. No rainbow today at the falls. Every one had a fast ride down "the big hill." Even Joe
topped out at over 42 mph. Paul had the top speed of 46.4 pedaling like crazy. Bill hit 45+
just coasting. The coffee shop was closed today. Jerry was prepared with a cooler of nice cold
beverages to share with the group back at the parking lot. Thanks Jerry!!

April 18 - Niagara Recreation Trail

All week long the forecast was wind, rain and cold for today. Boy were they wrong. It ended up being
a very nice day to ride. There was virtually no traffic on the Peace Bridge this morning. Getting through
customs took less than a minute. Milan showed off his 153 mm cranks that he had just put on the Speed-
machine. Before heading out Ed mentioned that he'd like to try bleeding his rear brake. Before long we
had the entire system disassembled and in pieces on the bike path. It took the three of us about 40
minutes to get things put back together and working again. (Milan did most of the work) Since there
was so little traffic we decided to ride the road instead of the path. This streamlined the trip considerably.
Just before we got to Chippawa we came upon a woman and her daughter riding their Rhodes Car. Never
having seen one before we stopped to check it out. No sooner did we stop when the couple jumped out
and encouraged us to try it out. It was quite a machine. One person steered and had control of the brakes
( one disk and one drum). Each rider had 36 speeds and pedaled independently. The seats had arm rests
and there was a canopy to keep the sun and rain off. All in all quite an interesting HPV. Took a short break
at the Table Rock visitors center. As we rode past the falls the temperature must have dropped 30º or
so. There was still a lot of ice right around the American Falls and Terrapin Point. A light, but very cold,
mist drifted down on us as we rode by. We took to the path when we got up to the Spanish Aero Car. With
no leaves out yet we had an unobstructed view of the gorge as we headed north. Niagara-On-The-Lake had
smaller than usual crowds. There was no one in line when we entered The Epicurean for lunch. The food was
excellent as always. Shortly after lunch it had warmed up to the point of having to shed some clothes to
keep from overheating. The sun was shining and we were loving it. This remains to be the finest place
    to ride for miles around.

A little chilly this morning (36º) but lots of blue sky and sunshine. There was alot to look at in the
parking lot before we headed out. Ed had his newly restored and updated M.A.S.A. Slingshot. Bill
had his new M5 Titanium Shock Proof. Milan had his home made wheel cover to show off. Joe had
a spiffy new helmet that also doubles as a wheel chock. Don was demonstrating his skills on fixing
a flat. Tom B. has a great looking custom paint job on his tailbox. Today we rode the trail down to
the park and back. The falls looked nice this morning. The creek was really flowing fast and the sun
was hitting it just rite to produce a wonderful rainbow. Had a nice lunch out on the patio afterwards
and talked about upcoming rides this year.

    March 16 - CCCC
Today was, without a doubt, the nicest day so far this year. Clear blue sky all day long. It was
53º when we headed out and 64º when we got back. There were numerous stops along the way
as people had to remove sweatshirts, jackets and vests. The bike paths still had some snow and
ice cover in spots so we kept to the roads. Tom B. suggested we head south and ride one of the
alternate routes today. This took us into Lancaster, Alden Center, Millgrove, Newstead and
back to Clarence Center. The roads were clear and dry in all but a very few spots where
some snow melt runoff crossed our path. There were a lot of people out washing their cars
and working in their yards. As we rode past John Valby's house, Joe thought if we stopped
in he might sing some songs for us. We kept on riding. The wind picked up as we turned in to
it on the last leg of the ride. This didn't seem to bother Tom B. or Bruce as they picked up
the pace and left the rest of us behind. Back at the coffee shop we found Bill waiting for
us. We all sat out on the patio under the sun and had a nice lunch. Unfortunately they didn't
have any green beer. Oh well.
