Men Of Kent

George Lewes is my 9th Great-Grandfather and earliest known Lewes (Lewis) ancestor to emigrate to America from Brenchley, Kent, England to Scituate, Massachusetts along with his brother John in the early 1630's and were referred to by the people of Scituate as "The Men of Kent".

Following is an article written by C . Wellington Furlong and displayed on the Scituate Historical Society website that describes colonial times in Scituate and about the Men of Kent.

George Lewes is not specifically mentioned in this article but the article does give a vision of the character of the men and women who made the journey from the Old World to the New. George is recorded as owning property in Scituate in 1633. George left Scituate in 1639 with the Reverend John Lothrop and is one of the known founders of the town of Barnstable.
